Hi, I know this is really random, but I'm an incoming ALT this July and (like most of the incoming ALTs) quite nervous about what's coming and the very slow feeling of the information flow.

I'm heading to Sanpoku-machi in Niigata, and found Martin's Niigata weblog ring through Google. Is everyone on it in Niigata city? I'm hoping to find the person who's currently in Sanpoku, or anyone who can reassure me that there's more in the area than what Google maps seems to show. *g*

Thank you!

so...you want me to answer you here?
sanpoku is in the northern part of niigata prefecture boarding on yamagata prefecture.
it's has one of the most beautiful coastline's along the north. it's a small place, and you're about 1.5 hour drive/train ride from niigata city.
at the moment i'm the regional adviser of that area but that position will be passed on to a guy named joel post when you come in july/august. there is a girl living in sanpoku at the moment, and i will try to get her email address for you. i think she's american.
you can get some more information about niigata here:
http://www.niigatajet.net/
on the niigata JET website.
sanpoku is closer to murakami, the smaller city in the north. there will be 5 or 6 ALTs there. (also where joel lives). both are right on the coast.

also, if you're into boarding or skiing, there are a few resorts within a 30 minute drive or so. there is an incredible amount of snow here in the winter

Ahaha. Also, my email address is reed(dot)apostol(at)gmail(dot)com, because leaving my email address might be handy.

Sorry about that.

Thanks for answering my questions! I'm starting to get really excited about moving.

Also, before I forget to say again in my silly-nervousness, your pictures are gorgeous. : )
